The alcohol is keeping the edge off the pain, and Jim is too stubborn to stay down. This guy is strong, and he knows how to use his strength. But Jim's been a starship captain for only a year. He was a drunken waste of space back in Iowa for much longer. That habit's much harder to break.

Well, being that he's a mortal, my first guess at his "place" would be "here on Earth". Just an educated guess, since I happen to be one, myself. What'd he do to get under your codpiece, anyway, big guy?
